DEATH TO THE ARTIST STATEMENT - PART 1

How to kill the artist statement in less than 300 words? The occupation of the artist has lost its glamour today. I say we blame it on the invention of the artist statement. If killing art would help to throw the very idea of the artist statement in to the dustbin of art history, I say: Yeah let's do it!

An artist statement is a document of roughly three paragraphs explaining the intimate thoughts of the artist, the message, the creative process, and the reason behind the artwork. Though it sounds innocent enough, it is probable cause for the downfall of many artists today.

It is common for Western artists to believe that art doesn`t need and should not cater to the taste of the “common” viewer, that it should run free, unbound from and immune to popular trends and fashions. As the predictable consequence of such an introverted point of view, the artist becomes a paradox caught in the hopeless conflict between the natural need to be recognized by the public and not being able to be understood by it.

The invention of the artist statement attempted to solve this very issue through explaining the artist's thoughts in written document. The intentions might have been honest and results at first seemed beneficial for both the artist and the public. But it was only a matter of time before it became evident that the artist statement had quite the opposite effect and contributed further to the drifting apart of the artist and the audience. Ever since it was first used, the artist statement has been employed by many as an excuse to create failures, and certainly contributed to the devaluation of technical skills in the making of art.

Results have been devastating for art; people care less and less about art; they do not frequent museums or galleries anymore and have generally lost faith in the artist community. I don`t blame them. I myself standing in the middle of a gallery looking at pile of tins and boxes can`t help but feel nothing…

The pile of trash is what it is; no matter what title the artist gave to it. And an elaborate artist statement pasted on the side of it signifies nothing, just an insult.
